Observation Narrative
Vegetation in this plot is a small remnant of formerly extensive oak-hickory forest occurring on basic soils weathered from Virgilina greenstone, a mafic metavolcanic formation. Two powerline ROWs, clearcutting and conversion of hardwoods to pine plantations destroyed or degraded much of the occurrence. The plot reflects the floristic richness and liana ground cover often developed in surprisingly dry habitats on southern Piedmont mafic substrates. Noteworthy plants occurring here include the long range disjunct Porteranthus stipulatus and the mafic indicators Ruellia purshianus, Clematis ochroleuca and Erigeron pulchellus.
